JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) - Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch has ordered the city of Jackson to turn over the parcel where Smith-Wills Stadium is located by September 30 or face legal action. In a September 13 letter to Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba, Fitch said she had determined that terms of the lease granting the parcel to the city had been violated, and the state would take “appropriate action to enforce the reverter language of the 1944 deed.” Included with the one-page letter is a quit claim deed. Fitch tells Lumumba to seek council approval for the deed, and to execute and deliver it to the state “as soon as possible.” “Should the city fail or refuse to convey its rights to the property by September 30, 2024, then appropriate legal action will commence,” Fitch writes. The letter was also provided to all six council members. Council President Virgi Lindsay, who represents the area where Smith-Wills is located, said has not been briefed by legal so cannot comment. Jackson Director of Communications Melissa Faith Payne said the city doesn’t believe it is in breach. JACKSON, Miss.
